The Hall Dale Elementary School PTO has arranged a special family and friends ski afternoon at Lost Valley in Auburn.  Anyone who is part of the RSU #2 community (students, teachers, parents, staff & friends) is welcome to join us. In the event of snow, ice or other weather conditions that require the closing or delay of school, the following procedure will be followed by the RSU:

Between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. information concerning general road and schoolyard conditions, weather forecasts and road commissioners’ reports will be considered by those making the school closing decision. Information regarding weather and road conditions will be forwarded to the Superintendent before 5:00 a.m. should a concern exist regarding unsafe driving conditions.

A decision to close/delay or not to close/delay school will be made between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. by the Superintendent or his designee.

If weather and road conditions permit, a delayed school opening may occur. In the event a delayed opening is used, announcement of same will be made over the radio and television.

The Superintendent will confer with city and town Road Commissioners and Transportation Directors regarding storm and road conditions that may affect length of the school day. If the decision to close is made prior to 9:30 a.m. the closing will be announced over area radio stations.

When necessary to dismiss school early, middle school and high school buses will operate approximately one-half hour earlier than elementary bus runs. Only in unusual circumstances, safety of pupils being the controlling factor, will early dismissal occur prior to serving school lunch.

When there is an early dismissal, all school activities scheduled in the afternoon or evening of that day will be cancelled for that day, including adult education classes.

When there is a “no school day” and weather and road conditions improve sufficiently prior to 2:00 p.m. the decision may be made by the Superintendent to allow a pre-scheduled evening extra-curricular or adult education classes to be held. In the event the activity is held, an announcement will be made over local radio stations.

Radio/TV Stations used for announcements are WABK (104.3 FM), WGAN, WMME (92 Moose), Cumulus Radio, MIX 107.9, WCSH TV (Channel 6), WGME TV (Channel 13), WMTW TV (Channel 8) and WABI TV (Channel 5)

Come support the Class of 2014 on October 8th and enjoy a delicious breakfast. Sophomores will be serving pancakes, eggs, and sausage dished up with a large portion of gratitude for your support. Proceeds will be used to begin their Project Graduation fund.

Breakfast begins at 7:00 a.m. and continues until 10:00 a.m.. The cost is $5.00 per person or $12.00 per family. Please join us at the Hall-Dale High School cafeteria and enjoy a scrumptious breakfast while you support our students.

Route 201 in Farmingdale will be closed to thru-traffic from approximately 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 until Thursday night, Sept. 15, weather permitting. The construction of a large box culvert between Northern Ave. and Sheldon St. requires that the road be closed and for a detour to be in effect. Rt. 201 will be open to local traffic only between Maple St. and Sheldon St. for access to homes and businesses. Access to all businesses will be maintained. All bus riders will receive a change in bus service notification by Friday. Busses will still run, but some stops will be affected. If you would like to hear the changes immediately, please call your school’s office.

There’s something that stands out to me about the schools I’ve visited since becoming Commissioner that have taken major steps toward implementing a standards-based model of education.

It’s not just that students at these schools are making choices about how they’ll learn and how they’ll demonstrate to their teachers that they’ve met the expectations set out for them.

It’s that if you ask a student in Shelly Moody’s fourth-grade class at Williams Elementary School in Oakland or Kelly Grantham’s seventh-grade English class at Massabesic Middle School in East Waterboro about what they’re doing, you’ll be taken aback by the answer.

Any student in those classes will tell you what standard they’re working to meet, how they’re becoming proficient in that skill, and what they’ll do next. They’ll tell you how what they’re doing figures into the class’ code of conduct they helped develop at the start of the school year. And they’ll explain why they chose the approach they did to meet the standard.

These students are not only learning the skills they’re expected to master. They’re developing something else: a literacy about learning.

On Friday, the Maine Legislature’s Education Committee unanimously passed L.D. 949, a bill that pushes Maine to that point where every student will graduate with a standards-based diploma — a diploma that indicates a student has mastered the expectations in each content area, not simply put in a specified amount of time at school.

Should that bill make its way through the rest of the legislative process, it’s inevitable that the standards-based model will expand to more Maine schools.

When that happens, the districts that have already started the transformation will be a helpful resource to those districts at the beginning.

And based on my experience in East Waterboro and Oakland, the students will be the standards-based model’s most articulate spokespeople.
